Mariah confirmed as Idol judge:
Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly also confirms that Jennifer Lopez will not be back.
Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly opened his executive session at the Television Critics Association with some news: Mariah Carey will be on the American Idol judges panel next season.
We do in fact have one judge whose deal closed very recently," said Reilly. "It's an artist that many contestants have tried to emulate. Because it really was concluded only hours ago our new judge couldn't be with us."
Reilly called Carey from the stage at the Beverly Hilton. "I am so excited to be joining Idol," said Carey. "I can't wait to get started."
Reilly also confirmed that Jennifer Lopez is exiting. "I think I can confirm that it's 100 percent that Jennifer will not be back with the show."
Mariah takes to her Twitter page and confirms this exciting news:
"It's gonna be so much fun working on @americanidol. As a singer-songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! --MC"
--------------------------
Other notes:
* She will be the highest paid TV judge in history. * American Idol is still the #1 non-sporting TV show, both in the US and worldwide. * American Idol airs in over 150 countries and has the capacity to reach 1 billion viewers.

I'm so happy about this! I can't wait to watch Mariah every week. I have such a good feeling about this era. Everything seems to be falling into place.
I had a dream about Mariah being on Idol last night. I imagined her to be incredibly cut throat during the auditions saying a simple "No." to bad auditions. I dreamt the show was getting huge ratings because of this new side to Mariah haha.

Sorry for the double post but I think that this will translate into sales for Mariah. I know it didn't help J.Lo but this is Mariah we're talking about.
I can't imagine this not boosting her sales while she is on the show. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but I think this can only help.

Over the years they`ve been hiring people who "popular" for high rates but no-one who actually knows music and can actually sing. Mariah has been in the game for over 20 years and has been thru the ups and downs of the music industry, her opinion will come from a place of knowledge and experience and she will keep it real. IMO people like Shıtney and Jhoe have no place to be judging other people`s voices when they can`t sing themselves. It`s gonna fun to seeing the hilarious side to her and she will educate people on the real music industry.

I agree with you guys! Like Matty said, with J.Lo - it may not have helped much with album sales (although it did with a couple of her singles).. With Mariah, it DEFINITELY will. Mariah still sells albums relatively well without much promo - with Mariah on TV twice a week, could you imagine the sales boost she'll receive. It was only announced today and she already has four albums bulleting up the iTunes Chart - AND THAT'S AUSTRALIA. She'll blow up in the US, especially if she comes across as likeable, which I'm sure she will Sooooo excited! Seeing her on TV twice a week will be amazing! All the random acapella moments that are bound to happen also excites me I could go on and on about this.. I was apprehensive a week ago, but I'm soooo on board now P.S. Disregarding a few haters (who tend to be huge J.Lo or Madonna fans) on Twitter, the general public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Many "general viewers" have noted Mariah's credibility in terms of achievements and talent. This bodes well too

I was just thinking about how UMA will time it considering auditions are a little over 2 months away, then obviously the live shows some time later. You would nearly assume that Mariah would have had two-three singles already out by then wouldn't you?
Would it be wise to delay the album slightly to maximise the exposure on idol? Although none of us would probably wait lol! Think about it. single out August, then album October one would imagine. Idol live shows aren't on until 2013. I'm just not sure how this is going to work.
You would really love the album to come out during the live shows but I don't think it's going to be possible. What are some thoughts on this?
Also, will Mariah have to shoot videos before the hectic schedule commences? Another point will be the tour. She'll probably have to kick it off after idol which will be in the second half of 2013.
I'm really pleased that we will get the chance to see her regularly on idol. I have foxtel in HD so I'm super excited. Just imagine her sales in Australia as we know that just little exposure always gets sales for MC here.
CAN'T WAIT!

Great points Chris! Well the auditions don't air in the US until mid January - and the live shows will begin in mid-Feb, so maybe it'll be too late to launch the album then. Plus, Feb is the slowest time of the year in terms of CD sales. They don't really pick up until April. They'll probably use Idol to boost the album after the initial hype/Christmas period - in order to give the album some longevity. She'll probably be on single #3 by then, so she'll be able to perform it live and allow for the album to sell consistently throughout the year. No idea though, just my thoughts. Wouldn't be surprised by anything Can't wait!! Yayyyyy!

Oh thanks Tim. Like I thought, bugger in terms of sales/promotion but yay to seeing her so regularly. Dani, you gotta stop writing about hot cakes after 9pm cause where the heck am I gonna get one now that I've just made a cuppa? In terms of the outfits- lol lol lol. Me and my babe can't wait to watch her. When we saw TEOM, she was fascinated by how many different ones she had on. The saying does go "GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT"!

People at FOMM are suggesting that aside from the babies, Mariah took the job because the pay check alleviates the need to tour - they apparently know Mariah well enough to state she doesn't like touring.
I don't know how the audition process will work with single/album promotion but it's all in America. I'm sure Mariah will be able to fly in and out of a city for a performance/interview while she's on the road auditioning.
Plus, Idol will probably change the audition process and they might end up having a central location and force people to come to them like the Voice.
